Dear President Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Drell,
I am encouraged by recent news reports that you are reconsidering the decision to cut 11 varsity programs.
The pandemic presented challenges for everyone, including Stanford. But now that the end is in sight, Stanford should reinstate the teams while it reconsiders the decision and the future of the Athletics Department.
It’s clear the department has significant financial challenges, and, under any scenario, Stanford will need engaged and enthusiastic alumni. If Stanford does not reinstate the teams, I fear alumni anger will fester and grow.
I hope Stanford will take this opportunity to build a partnership with 36 Sports Strong. You can seize this moment and fulfill the promises Stanford made to 240 students -- instead of taking away their opportunity to compete at Stanford.
I urge you to work with 36 Sports Strong to map out a new future for Stanford athletics.
A Hopeful Alum
