In July 2020, Stanford University announced it would be eliminating men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling. These 11 sports represent roughly one-third of the school’s 36 sponsored athletic programs, account for 240 athletes and include programs that have produced 20 national titles and 27 Olympic medals.

  • We support reinstating all 11 varsity programs at Stanford.

  • We support giving teams the time and opportunity to self-fund and believe they can. The cut programs have already raised $40 million in pledges.

  • We believe the breadth of Stanford's athletics department has been and should continue to be a fundamental part of the university's identity.

  • We ask the Board of Trustees to reconsider the decision because it changes Stanford's character — and was made at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic while many unknown factors were at play.
